CONSERVATORS WITHOUT FRONTIERS

IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND OUR PRESENT AND MASTER THE FUTURE, WE NEED TO SAFEGUARD OUR PAST

Blackened Paper

We rescue the past for the future

IN CRISIS SITUATIONS, SUCH AS WAR AND NATURAL DISASTERS, LINKS TO THE PAST ARE OFTEN IRREVOCABLY DESTROYED

The history of mankind is significantly documented in the holdings of archives and libraries. Saving the original recorded history from catastrophes of any kind is one of the central tasks of our organisation, especially when the work of conservators is essential for the long term preservation of the originals, which contain information in text and images, as well as the material on which it is recorded.

Natural disasters (earthquakes, flooding etc.) and societal challenges (armed conflicts and civil unrest) make quick and appropriate intervention increasingly important.

CURRENT OPERATIONS

THE ARTICLES BELOW SHOW YOU SOME OF OUR RESCUE OPERATIONS

In our blog we report on our current rescue missions to war or disaster areas, to give you an insight into how donations are used.

HOW WE WORK

TEAMWORK, COMPETENCE AND QUICK HELP ARE THE PILLARS ON WHICH OUR WORK STANDS

As soon as a call for help reaches us, we verify the source and the way in which we can help:

  • Emergency analysis

  • Whether other organizations need to be involved,

  • Legal situation

  • Infrastructural situation on site

  • Whether we can involve/activate restorers on site.

A work plan is then drawn up, the necessary means and methods are brought together, everything necessary is organized, and - off we go. Essential is the well-functioning interaction of organizers in Austria and our specialists worldwide.
